In addition to all of these wonderful perks, music therapy has positive effects on the heart. Previous studies have shown that happy, joyful music can have favorable effects on the endothelium, which in turn helps your heart. Dr. Predrag Mitrovic (investigator from the University of Belgrade, Serbia) conducted a 7 year experiment using music therapy on patients with Acute Coronary Syndrome (ACS). During this time, 740 patients were split into groups of 370 between April, 1999 and January, 2009. One group received two sessions of music therapy for twelve minutes daily, and the other group did not. The group who underwent music therapy had less anxiety, a lower heart rate, and systolic and diastolic blood pressure. They also had less Angina (throat inflammation), heart failure, lower rates of reinfection, sudden death, and revascularization (provision of blood to the body or organs).
As I stated in the Physical Injuries section, the psychological effects of music trigger responses within the body that produce various chemicals and proteins, resulting in the presented physical benefits of music: decreased blood pressure, decreased muscle tension, increased immunity, etc.
